Alienate [eyl-yuh-neyt, ey-lee-uh-]: To create emotional distance between; to make hostile or unfriendly

1-) The international student felt alienated from his family back home. 2-) Karl Marx criticized capitalism on the grounds that it alienates the worker from his work. 3-) The tanking economy was a source of alienation among voters.
